The Human Behavior Laboratory

The Human Behavior Laboratory (HBL) is dedicated to theoretical and methodological development concerning the spatio-temporal organization of human behavior and interactions. The focus is on the development and testing of mathematical pattern types for the description and analysis of behavior as a complex process that takes place in real-time and space. A series of related patterns have already been defined and are now called the t-language or the t-system.

Special software, Theme, has been developed for the testing of the t-system and for its research application. The Theme software frequently detects complex hidden patterns that are missed by other available methods and software. The focus is mainly on human behavior but behavior of other animals is also considered because of the important perspective it often provides on the human case.

Further information

Introduction

The Theme software performs intensive structural analysis of real-time records of the behavior of one or more individuals performing various kinds of behaviors in sequence and/or concurrently. Theme was initially developed as a tool for the study of human (face-to-face) interactions, but its application has been extended to other types of behavioral phenomena involving other time scales {here link to: references and thesis).

The program is primarily intended for use by persons with knowledge of behavior (and statistics), i.e., mostly students and researchers in the behavioral sciences.

Theme is sometimes called a "structure-scope" or a "pattern-scope" and sometimes a "behavior-scope".

The Theme program is therefore a kind of structural "seeing aid" that facilitates the difficult task of discovering, describing and eventually explaining the structure of complex processes that unfold in time such as intra- and inter-individual streams of behavior.

The detection key is the repetition of similar, hierarchical real-time relations between the occurrences of various types of behavioral events.

It is true for this "pattern-scope" as for microscopes that what is perceived and retained by the user is a function of both him- or her-self and the instrument; including such aspects as data preparation. A seeing aid helps to discover and describe if the observer is aware of the kind of "glasses" he or she is wearing.

History of Theme

The Theme program by Magnus S. Magnusson has evolved over a number of years from a DOS program written in FORTRAN IV on PDP11 computers at the Psychological Laboratory, Copenhagen University (Magnusson, 1982).

Its development was then continued by M. S. Magnusson at the Anthropology Laboratory of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris (1984-1988) and then at the University of Paris (V, VIII, XIII) 1989-1993.

Its development has since been continued at the Human Behavior Laboratory, University of Iceland founded and directed by Prof. Magnusson and in collaboration with a number of laboratories in Europe and the USA.

Theme is now a WINDOWS 95/982000 and NT program written in the DELPHI programming language (Magnusson, 2000) and is used in a number of psychological and ethological laboratories in Europe, USA and Japan.

Theme has always been used in behavior analysis where the detection and interpretation of repeated hidden behavior patterns and the effect of independent variables on behavior and interactions have been central concerns.

The software development has now been transferred to Pattern Vision Ltd in collaboration with the Human Behavior Laboratory, U.I.

Theoretical background of Theme

The theoretical background of the research and development at the Human Behavior Laboratory is indicated in:

  • Magnusson, M. S. (2000). "Discovering Hidden Time Patterns in Behavior: T-Patterns and their Detection." Behavior Research Methods, Instruments and Computers, 32(1): pp. 93-110.
  • Magnusson, M.S. (1996) "Hidden Real-Time Patterns in Intra- and Inter-Individual Behavior: Description and Detection." European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol. 12, Issue 2, p. 112-123. See also references.

The basic viewpoints can be suggested through the following citations:

  • "The activity of man constitutes a structural whole, in such a way that it cannot be subdivided into neat "parts" or "levels" or "compartments" insulated in character, content, and organization from other behavior. Verbal and nonverbal activity is a unified whole, and theory and methodology should be organized or created to treat it as such." (Pike, 1960, p. 2).
  • "Behavior consists of patterns in time. Investigations of behavior deal with sequences that, in contrast to bodily characteristics, are not always visible." (Eibl-Eibesfeldt, 1970, p. 1; Opening statement of Ethology: The Biology of Behavior. Emphasis added).
  • "...we need to identify the countless patterns and natural sequences of behavior occurring whenever persons come into one another's immediate presence." (E. Goffman, 1967; here cited from A. Kendon, 1990, p. ix).
  • "Occasions of interaction are, most of the time, ordered affairs. When two people greet one another, when several sustain a conversation, when a committee meets to conduct its business, when people pass one another on the street, most of the time these are ordered occasions in the sense that they "come off" in an unnoticed fashion." (Kendon, 1990, p. 1).
  • "An occasion of interaction such as a conversation, thus, may be looked upon as an occasion in which the participants enter into a complex system of relationships which nonetheless may be understood in terms of general principles which are discoverable and generally applicable, even though the course of any specific encounter is unique (cf. Kendon 1963, Argyle and Kendon 1967)." (Kendon, 1990 p. 4). Emphasis added.

2025 – Pr. M.T. Anguera passed away January 19th, 2025. Teresa was not only a remarkable professional but also a source of inspiration and guidance to so many of us. SAMSTARFSSAMNINGUR ENDURNYJADUR (IS)

Reykjavík 15/8/14

Samstarfssamningur um þróun „Methodology for the Analysis og Social Interaction“ (MASI) milli 24 háskóla í Evrópu og Ameríku hefur nú verið endurnýjaður í fjórða sinn með undirritun Rektora allra háskólanna. Samningurinn varðar rannsóknasamstarf um greiningu atferlis og samskipta/gagnvirkni á grundvelli „Magnusson‘s analytical model“ þ.e. stærðfræðilegs fræðilíkans, algríma og hugbúnaðar Magnúsar S. Magnússonar, forstöðumanns Rannsóknastofu um mannlegt atferli, RMA, en til samstarfssamningsins var upphaflega stofnað 1995 á Sorbonne í París þar sem Magnús S. Magnússon áður gegndi prófessorsstöðu. Þá tóku þátt sjö evrópskir háskólar.

RMA er rannsóknaaðili MASI við H.Í. Starfsemi RMA fer fram í samstarfi við rannsóknahópa í sálarfræði, atferlislíffræði og taugalíffræði og eru flestir meðlimir í MASI. Auk Háskóla Íslands eru núverandi þátttakendur m.a. Autonomous University of Barcelona;  Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Milano; Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest; Metropolitan State University of Denver; National Autonomous University of Mexico; Russian Academy of Medical Sciences; University of Barcelona; University of Basque Country; University of Guadalajara, Mexico; University of Milano-Bicocca; University of Paris XIII; University of Porto og University of Wurzburg. University of Berlin hefur nú auk þess formlega óskað eftir þátttöku í MASI. Samstarf RMA á sviði taugalíffræði (neuroscience) utan MASI, er að mestu við aðila á University of Cambridge, UK. Þá má einnig geta þess að RMA er í samstarfi við Harvard háskóla um rannsóknir á fjárhættuspilun á netinu og við Gervigreindasetur HR og fleiri erlenda háskóla á sviði gervigreindar.

Auk fjölda greina hefur MASI staðið að útgáfu safnritsins “The Hidden Structure of Interaction: from neurons to culture patterns” (Anolli, Duncan, Magnusson, Riva eds., 2005) og er nú verið að leggja lokahönd á nýja  bók sem hlotið hefur vinnuheitið “Temporal Chemistry of Behavior and Social Interaction“ (Magnusson & McNeill), sem auk MASI er gerð í samstarfi við samstarfsaðila í meira en þrjá áratugi við The University of Chicago.

Dagana 5.-6. september n.k. verður haldin við Háskóla Íslands ráðstefna/vinnufundur MASI sem haldnir eru annað hvert ár við einhvern af samstarfsháskólunum (áður m.a. Barcelona, Guadalajara, Paris, Milano og Budapest).

Þess má geta að RMA hefur á síðustu árum einnig tekið þátt í fjölmörgum verkefnum á Íslandi þar sem ofannefndu greiningarlíkani hefur verið beitt og sem hafa notið stuðnings Tækniþróunarsjóðs hjá Rannís, m.a. "DNA greining með Theme" í samstarfi við deCode og Atferlisgreiningu; "T-mynsturgreining á svefnritum" í samstarfi við MedCare Flaga og Atferlisgreiningu; ""Sjávarfallatengt atferli þorsks" í samstarfi við Hafrannsóknastofnun ofl; „Greining á samfélögum á netinu“ í samtarfi við Clara og Atferlisgreiningu; og „EcoScope: T-mynsturgreining fjármála- og hagfræðigagna“ í samstarfi við Datamarket, Fjármálaeftirlitið, NetInternals og Atferlisgreiningu.

RMA var sem fyrr þungamiðjan í hinu formlega samstarfsneti nú 32 háskóla „Methodology for the Analysis of Social Interaction“ (MASI), sem stofnað var 1995 á Sorbonne í París, þar sem MSM áður gegndi prófessorsstöðu, en hans greiningarlíkan hefur frá upphafi verið sameiginlegur grundvöllur MASI, sem það hefur sent frá sér fjölda greina og tveggja safnrita auk þess að halda alþjóðlega vinnufundi/ráðstefnur annað hvert ár til skiptis á MASI háskólum.

MSM fæst enn í síauknu mæli við sjálfsvipun (self-similarity) milli tímalegra mynstra í samskiptum meðal manna, dýra og taugafruma og milli protein samfélaga (Cell City) og fjöldasamfélaga (mass-societies) meðal manna. Við hans T-system formgerðarhugtaka bættist við „T-string“ sem styrkir mjög sýn sjálfsvipun (self-similarity) yfir meira en 9 stærðargráður beint milli risasamfélaga proteina og manna (en engra annara dýrategunda) og virðist skýra skyndilega gerbreytingu, á líffræðilegu augnabliki, á í tilveru mannsins; m.a. gífurlega aukning fólksfjölda og bylting í þekkingu og tækniþróun nær alls mannkyns á nær öllum sviðum.  Þessi T-string sjálfsvipun finnst ekki hjá öðrum risasamfélögum hvorki dýra eða fruma.

Á árinu þáði MSM boð um að halda keynote fyrirlestra um efnið á eftirfarnadi alþjóðlegum ráðstefnum: Structural Biology (18-19/3, Paris, France), Cell & Stem Cell Research (25-26/3, Orlando, USA), Nanotechnology (3-4/4, Philadelphia), Cell and Stem Cell Research (18-20/4, New York), Genetics, Genetic Disorders and Stem Cell (13-14/5, Stockholm), Mass Spectrometry (20-21/5, Rome, Italy), Nanotechnology and Materials Science (July 22-24/7, Rome, Italy) and Hematology (23-24/10, Paris, France).

Á árinu lauk MSM við nýja grein m.a. um efnið: T-Pattern Detection and Analysis (TPA) With THEMETM: A Mixed Methods Approach. Front. Psychol., 10 January 2020  https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.02663

Anarri grein var einnig lokið : “T-Patterns, external memory and mass-societies in proteins and humans: in an eye-blink the naked ape became a string-controlled citizen”.

Ritstýrði bók sem kom út hjá Frontiers: Best Practice Approaches for Mixed Methods Research in Psychological Science. Að auki sat Guðberg í vinnuhópi Netöryggisáætlunar ESB um öruggara og betra internet fyrir ung fólk, verkefnahóp vegna ESB verkefna COST og H2020. Guðberg kenndi einnig námskeið á árinu fyrir hönd RMA, m.a. við háskóla á Spáni, Ítalíu og Þýskalandi og sótti rástefnur og birti ritrýndar greinar á nokkrum fræðasviðum.

RMA  var áfram þungamiðjan í hinu formlega samstarfsneti „Methodology for the Analysis of Social Interaction“ (MASI), stofnað 1995 á Sorbonne í París, þar sem MSM áður gegndi prófessorsstöðu, en greiningarlíkan MSM hefur frá upphafi verið hin sameiginlegi grundvöllur MASI. Tuttugu og fjórir háskólar taka nú þátt í MASI, en fjórir háskólar óskuðu formlega eftir þátttöku á árinu og bætast við formlega við næstu endurnýjun, þ.e. 2016.

J. Neuroscience Methods birti ýtarlega umfjöllun (comprehensive review) um greiningarlíkan MSM og beitingu þess (T-Pattern Detection and Analysis, TPA) með tilsvarandi hugbúnaði MSM í margvíslengum rannsóknum: „T-pattern analysis for the study of temporal structure of animal and human behavior: A comprehensive review” (Casarrubea, Jonsson, Magnusson et al, 2015): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25280983

Sama tímirit birti niðurstöður beittingar TPA með THEME í langtíma samstarfi MSM við rannsóknaaðila á The University of Cambridge (UK): „Complex spike patterns in olfactory bulb neuronal networks” (Nicol, Segonds-Pichon, Magnusson et al, 2015): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=nicol+magnusson+2015

MSM var heiðursgestur við alþjóðlegu Proteomics ráðstefnuna 2015 í Valencia á Spáni: http://www.conferenceseries.com/Past_Reports/proteomics-2015-past og hélt keynote fyrirlestur: Similarity of patterning in behavioural interactions and on DNA: T-Patterns and structured hierarchical clustering in time and space

Einnig hélt MSM fyrirlestur á alþjóðlegri ráðstefnu Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology and Life Sciences í Florida http://www.societyforchaostheory.org/conf/2015/

Unnið var áfram að safnriti um niðurstöður beitingar greiningarlíkans og THEME hugbúnaðar MSM. Bókin kom út hjá Springer í janúar 2016: “Discovering Hidden Temporal Patterns in Behavior and Interaction: T-Pattern Detection and Analysis with THEME™. Magnusson, Magnus S., Burgoon, Judee K., Casarrubea, Maurizio (Eds.).  Each chapter describes a different research application of T-Pattern Detection and Analysis with THEME (TM)”.  http://www.springer.com/gp/book/9781493932481

Dr. Guðberg K. Jónsson vann að innlendu og erlendu rannsóknasamstarfi á vegum RMA þar sem ofangreindu greiningarlíkani er beitt, m.a. verkefni um greiningu fjármálagagna í samstarfi við Fjármálaeftirlitið, DataMarket og NetInternals, styrkt af RANNÍS, og í samstarfi við Gervigreindarsetur HR og aðra Evrópska háskóla viðamikið verkefni á sviði gervigreindar, styrkt af 7. Rammaáætlun ESB. Að auki sat Guðberg í vinnuhópi Netöryggisáætlunar ESB um öruggara og betra internet fyrir ung fólk. Guðberg kenndi einnig námskeið á árinu fyrir hönd RMA, m.a. við háskóla í Ungverjalandi og á Spáni, sótti rástefnur og birti ritrýndar greinar á nokkrum fræðasviðum.
